While this may be true, there is also a trend toward online, or web based
documentation, which Word is terrible at producing even if you save the
document as an HTML file (ask any web developer). I've worked at companies
that created smaller Operator Manuals (less than 100 pages) and they moved
to InDesign because it worked well with both PDFs sent to the printers and
HTML sent to the web developer. Word was tried and failed miserably. It's
okay if you want to print the documents out on an office laser or ink jet
printer, but not when it's to be printed on an offset press.
Oh yeah, I've been creating both printed output and HAT's at various
companies for at least the last six years.
