TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Actually, often that is just how it is done: you write your own
recommendation and someone reviews it, modifies it (maybe) and signs it.
Years ago, we would not have dreamt of doing such a thing but with the
limited resources and accelerated schedules we all experience, people
don't have time to sit down and write a recommendation -- sad to say.

Really? It never occured to me to have my letters of reference written
by
anyone besides the person signing it....least of all written by me.
It just never occured to me.
Actually John, what I wrote was:
"All of my letters of recommendation include contact information and a
statement that the hiring authority can (contact) them for a personal
discussion of my abilities, etc. ...and yes, most of them I wrote
myself,
but with the idea that the person signing it could edit it as they
please.
I wrote them because, for the most part, the person signing the letter
didn't have time to do it themselves."
In virtually every case, my text was edited to include additional
accomplishments I had not thought about when I wrote the original draft.
So, while I wrote the draft letter, the final product was the result of
the
signer's editing. I have to tell you though, creating a couple hundred
pages of finished technical copy is far easier than writing a letter of
recommendation for yourself for someone else to sign.
