Re: Why oh why oh why
Is there any solution to this *&%*!! problem, which has existed for as long as I have been using Word?
I'm not the official Word greeter or apologist, and techwr-l isn't one of the many official (and unofficial) Word support lists. Such things do exist and are easy to find with Google. You might get the help you need by tracking down a Word MVP (again, try googling).
You're not the first person to get nowhere by blaming the software, the programmers, or painting yourself as a victim of Word.
That said, anyone frustrated by typical Word misbehavior or Word repetitive tasks can get some relief by finding out how to write or record a Word macro.
Here's your chance to show Word you're no victim: record a macro while you execute one complete search for an index field. When the search finds the field you're looking for, don't stop the recorder until you've hit the up-arrow key a few times. Then stop recording, assign the macro to a toolbar button or key-combo, and use it instead of Ctrl-F or the Edit menu when you search for fields.
Word's online help will probably give you the steps for recording and assigning the macro.
This is probably the best Word advice you never heard before. Take it, I have a spare.
