I don't know what you mean by "check out". You can set the number of hits per page to 100, and then go down 10-15 pages. That's about it. Google assumes that most people aren't interested in anything beyond the first 1000 or so hits.

The hits are ranked by an algorithm that attempts to give you the most "useful" results. The algorithm includes keyword matching, freshness of the page, and (most importantly) how many *other* sites link to the page. The thinking is that a page that 1000 other sites have linked to is more authoritative for a given keyword than a page that only 10 sites have linked to.

The algorithm is highly proprietary and confidential; I've only revealed stuff that Google has publicly revealed. This proprietary nature is a *feature*. Google is constantly working with both search and ads to prevent people from "gaming" the system.
