TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
If you do not mind volunteering, you could talk to the Community Relations department at a local hospital and see if they would like you to do a volunteer newsletter for them. I did that before going back to school. I volunteered to write a community newsletter on women's health for the hospital, which was actually really good experience. It gets you experience and possibly a foot in someone's door. Plus, it is kind of fun and you learn a lot!
Good luck and welcome to the list!
