Years ago (I won't admit how many) I started out as a graphic designer. Part of my education was extensive classes on type. Many studies exist on fonts and also the optimum line length based on the size of the font, the optimum spacing and tracking, and also the minimum and maximum amount of condensing that can be used while retaining legibility. Times roman was the standard for documents in English for people for whom English is a second language. I haven't looked for any new info on this subject, but I would expect that it is out there. It is a subject that was in the realm of designers and not writers.
