TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Kimberly McClintock wondered: <<I'm looking for a solid resource or
two to develop my sense of where aesthetics and usability meet in
information design...any recommendations?>>
John McQuade used to do brilliant things in his "Before and After"
magazine, which now seems to be up on the Web in a different form:
<http://www.bamagazine.com/> Haven't kept up with his work lately
(his publications are pricey if you're paying your own costs), so
caveat emptor. But even his worst older work used to rise well above
average.
Edward Tufte is another leading light in this field; check out his
several books, or visit his Web site (http://www.edwardtufte.com/
tufte/). Beware his rant about PowerPoint: he raises a few good
points, but the overall logic has been thoroughly debunked in a few
important journal articles, including a recent one by Jean-Luc
Doumont (in STC's _Technical Communication_).
