TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I do remember making a six-figure salary when I was the tech pubs manager at a software/hardware company here in Portland, Oregon but that was about 5 years ago. I managed writers at multiple sites and had to travel some but not alot. That company has long since died (run into the ground by greedy senior management) and I am back to being a senior tech writer at the much lower salary. I was the manager there for about 5 years.

I flipped through this highly annoying slideshow for some
time to find the slide about technical writers, and I would
say it's fairly accurate in its citing of Silicon Valley as the
location where writers can get six-figure salaries. There
are other tech centers, of course, but SV continues to be
the biggest. But also be sure to note the other slide where
it mentions the fact that in another part of the US one can
enjoy the same standard of living for $40k per year less.
