Having been an engineer, I can tell you that an awfu lot of technology
is the result of someone getting an idea seemingly out of nowhere and
making multiple attempts at it until finding an approach that works.
The results of engineering testing are somewhat more immediate and
less ambiguous than testing things that involve people at the end of the
chain, but the processes and methodologies to do it is well established.
It's simply that most companies don't do it.
