I never spelled tomato with an "e" and I am also a Michigander by birth. My
kids were raised in Alaska and they never spelled tomato with an "e";
although, my wife (another Michigander) says she spelled people "peaple"
until a sixth grade teacher corrected her.

I don't think it's a Midwestern thing as much as lazy teaching.
