I remember one temp-to-hire contract in which they literally had _nothing_ for me to work with. Told me to run out to the nearby Staples to get an index card box and cards so I could start collecting info. It was embarassing -- I was coming out of a long jobless period and didn't have the spare $5 to do that so had to ask for an advance from petty cash and it wasn't their regular policy to do that but instead to reimburse on the receipt. Come to think of it, that whole job was better forgotten -- it was the one where they took my lovely well-written work instructions and translated them into Spanish and moved the whole division to Mexico, along with 400 jobs including mine.
At my current job I had to bring my laptop from home for a month before they shuffled PCs around so that I could have my own. And we delayed my start date by an extra week so that I wouldn't miss out on my month-end bonus at the old job. Having a laptop sure beat going back to another 3x5 box!
