Several years ago here in PA no one was allowed to self-serve gasoline on
the theory that it was too dangerous. So a brain surgeon and PhD in physics
were not allowed to pump gas, but a 16-year old high school dropout was.
Thankfully, that law was changed.
As to the whole issue of usability and documentation becoming obsolete, I
had exactly the same thought as Lauren at one point. I've been lucky in
that development teams with which I've worked have been very open to having
me provide text for messages and labels.
I don't believe documentation will go away, but I do firmly believe that the
existing format is dead. I see it becoming much more embedded in
applications, as an extension of the application itself, rather than a
separate file invoked from the application interface.
