Living in Microsoft country, and having friends and relatives employed
by MS, I hear stuff that isn't normally in the news.
One rumor -- Microsoft lost much of it's original code for their early
products (no backups, no documentation). As a result, it is very
difficult to troubleshoot these programs. I suppose that's why the "Page
X of Y" bug rears its head every couple of Word releases.
