Look up the Word help - search for "image captions autonumbering." In
the Word 2000 help, I get four results, all of which are
relevant/useful. Those should pretty much explain the whole thing to
you, including that you normally need to use a built-in Heading style
for your headings, which are outline-numbered, for the caption to pick
up the number.
This isn't a flame, but it's pretty much a given that when someone
posts a query, they will already have at least searched the online
help for the application, and preferably also used a search engine to
look for possible answers on the Net... _before_ they post the query.
I urge you to try self-help first, especially for things that are
relatively simple, such as this caption numbering query.
