TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
"I have been a tech writer/pubs manager for 27
years and we are STILL fighting the same battles. Namely, SME's
inability or unwillingness to review doc, talk to writers etc.
Management's unwillingness to change that particular behavior (like
making doc review part of the SME's performance appraisal, for example)
and deadlines that do NOT include even adequate time for doc development
much less time for superior docs."
My favorite this month was the Project Manager's reply to a question
pertaining to service procedures for a precision, multi-million dollar
microelectronic manufacturing system.
"I don't know. That's what you're supposed to write."
So, I guess we really write fantasy fiction. All along I thought we were
writing non-fiction technical documents.
BTW Candis, I've been a writer for nearly 37 years (reporter, video
productions, and technical) and you're right about having to fight the same
battles over and over. Maybe it's time for us to retire, sit back on the
deck, watch the salmon on the grill, and sip some fine Chardonnay. It might
now win any battles, but it sure helps the blood pressure.
