The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I think it's her polite way of saying that nothing in life is really
free. With free software, it's the cost of support and maintenance by
consultants, which is often minimized with purchased software. I think
it's an important consideration.
Interestingly, some manufacturers are now selling open source software,
and trusting licensing and support schemes to keep people from
downloading the source and compiling it. I like the ability to oversee
source code, but in my experience, not enough people do it because
they're all running their own open source projects.
