Just to show that this isn't anything unique to our
profession, an old joke I heard a long time ago:

A man goes to an an orthodontist, who quotes him a
price of $5000 to do some work on his teeth.  He
says, "$5000 for some wires and metal bands?"
The orthodontist excuses himself for a moment,
then returns with a shoebox full of wires and bands.
"I'm sorry," he says, "I didn't realize that you wanted
the do-it-yourself kit.  We're running a special on
those this week, $59.95."
