30 years ago, my father had a Sunbean Tiger (the v8 version of the Sunbeam Alpine), REALLY fast.
It was a little two seater and the battery was in a compartment behind the passenger seat.
I was working on my Volvo and my brother, (who was 16 at the time) decided to start the Tiger, so he applied the jumpers, but backwards.
I hear him yelling for me to check out something "neat". It seems that the spark ignited the hydrogen in the battery, which was causing flames to shoot out the battery cap vents like little jets..batteries were not sealed at that time and had caps where you poured water.
Less than 3 seconds after I yanked him from staring directly down at the battery, the battery exploded and sent the whole battery top through the convertible roof (where three seconds before, his face would have protected the roof), shredding it as if it has been shot with a shotgun and spraying everything with battery acid.
I dragged him into the house and threw him, clothes and all, into the shower.
The next day I showed him his jacket, which was completely acid-eaten.
