TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I don't think I ever said "often too difficult to maintain over the long run", That carries the meaning that if it is too difficult, it can't be done.
Whether it is difficult or not is based on the amount of resources allocated to making changes. I did say it involved maintenance. OTOH, what part of an evolving IT infrastructure doesn't? Ever see a server that you plugged in and forgot?
Besides...the amount of maintenance is based on the level of change in the network, not the dimension of the document. What's the difference between making 20 changes in one large diagram as opposed to making individual changes in 20 8-1/2X11 documents?

Subject: Re: Unique Documentation
While it is not uncommon that the end-user wants a single "big hunker" of a diagram, the result, as I think you previously pointed out, is a diagram that is often too difficult to maintain over the long run.
