Bruce,
If you're lucky, embedded graphics can disappear when your computer is
overloaded. There are no longer enough resources to display the document
and the graphics. Worst case is that the document has corrupted...then
you're in a real mess...
Shut down and turn off your computer. Leave it off for at least 15
seconds to clear the RAM.
Next, delete all the temp files (you can do that from the control panel
or by going into C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local
Settings\Temp\ and deleting everything. Files that are being used by
other programs will not delete, but most should...
Empty your recycle bin.
Reopen the document, and pray...
If you can see the graphics again, good...If not, let me know and I'll
