A pity? I'd say it's par for the course. All language degenerates over
time, not as a result of thoughtful, refined improvements, but as a
result of mistakes and lazy usage. To see the grammar of a language
change in the same way is exactly what a Linguist would expect...
As for a specific answer to this question, unless your company has a
style guide that you must follow, the new standard is one-space.

In the end, I still use two spaces after end of sentence periods within
paragraphs because I find them more aesthetically pleasing that way.
It's just a pity that a deficiency in the more common word processors
have driven others to abandon the practice. :-(
