Richard Saul Wurman for examples of information graphics that work.
"Information Anxiety," is one title. He also designed books on travel,
health care, and personal finance, that are great examples clear and
informative visual displays of dense information. Some out-of-print
titles are available in library collections; you can also search book
sites like allbookstores.com.
