Hmm. I just searched for "1ce 2ce" (sans quotes) and got 23,000. But
only 5 of the first 20 are this usage (including, interestingly, Lauren
Tariel's reply on this thread). Most seem to be sizes/settings/codes in
a spec sheet or tech doc. The ones that are this usage don't inspire
confidence, either. Do you really want to use someone who says "WUD GO
BACK" as a language reference? :-)
In any case, 17,500 or 23,000 is not common, it's quite rare, and if
only a quarter of those are this usage,that's exceedingly rare. A search
on "once twice" (sans quotes) returns about 84,500,000. A search on
"once" alone returns 686,000,000.
Personally, I'm relieved that they're rare. I think "1ce" an
abomination. Not only is it confusing in many fonts, but it's also a
rather pointless piece of ugliness, saving just one lousy character.
