TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
The STC explanation sounds to me as if they revised the
survey because the peer-based survey "lacked credibility"
with HR "users," who generally can't distinguish between a
writer with expertise and an admin who knows how to edit
an engineer's Word drafts. but are probably tired of having
hiring managers like me constantly going to upper
management to argue that their established tech writer
salary ranges are too low to attract the kind of experienced
writers that need to be hired.
It's possible I'm misinterpreting what they're saying, but I
do know that nobody from STC ever asked me whether
the old survey was useful to me as a tech pubs manager.
