TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Like most topics in the TW world, the most correct answer here seems to
be "it depends."
Let's face it -- if they make an offer and it's more than I've been
making at the call center job I accepted when I was between gigs and the
unemployment was about to run out, and it happens to be just about half
what I know I "should" be making as a tech writer with my experience and
education -- but it's located where I want to live and it's got the
ten-minute commute that's very important to me and it's
interesting/challenging work with good people -- I'm going to say "yes".
And so would most of us.
It's been my long-held perception that a salary survey from the
professional association (STC) would have a high credibility with
managers. If the same information is available through BLS, no other
survey should be needed. Locating the BLS information is less than
intuitive, so a direct pointer to the correct URL would be a nice
service for STC to provide and we shouldn't need any more than that.
I'll almost certainly renew my STC membership this year, mostly because
my employer will probably pay for it. As a member I feel a bit like
Charlie Brown -- I know I will never get to kick that football but I
remain an eternal optimist.
