If it is one or more Microsoft updates causing the problem, their not affecting my computer. I'm using Windows XP Pro, SP2, fully updated, and Office 2007.
I also mentioned the file association possibility to Al, off-line. There's one other thing you might try:
Just to be on the safe side, disconnect from the Internet when you're doing this: Shut down any antivirus software you might have. If you're using a firewall above and beyond the one that's built into Windows (e.g., Zone Alarm), turn it off too. Once you've done those two tasks, try double-clicking on your Excel file again.
