CopySafe (http://www.copysafe.net/) looks promising
for protecting PDFs. Their website implies that it
offers more rubust PDF protection than just the
password-type protection offered by most PDF
protection tools. Also, PDF seems to be a rather
popular format for e-books.
Your friend could also host the content online, and
require a login to access the book. This would be
similar to a subscription program. I'm sure logins can
be shared by malicious pirates, but it's an option.
