My opinion is that you should adapt your procedures to make the best
and most efficient possible use of the tools you have. Based on your
description, that would involve not including revision control
information in the filename.
For the purpose of the customer, the important things regarding
version control (for instance in respect of their own ISO 9000 quality
system requirements) are as follows
1. That the document version information is available in all forms of
the document which they use (including printed copy)
2. That they have some reference source so that they know the current
version of the document which they should be working from.
Neither of these is compromised by losing the version information from
the filename, unless the only means by which the version information
appears in the document is by repetition of the filename itself.
