TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
The reason /I/ don't generally go to STC meetings (excep the schmoozes,
when I remember to put 'em in my PDA) is that they're not about things I
would find useful. I'm a tech writer, sure, but the tools I use
(FrameMaker, Illustrator) and the things I document (DVR hardware
testing) don't seem to get presented on. The biggest problem I have at
work (getting engineers to actually follow through and get me info)
doesn't seem to get presented on.
I suspect that I'm not the only one in this situation. The STC is useful
as a networking tool and I often recommend it to jobhunting or new tech
writers, but for someone in my situation it's not so useful. Now that my
employer isn't footing half my membership, I might not bother renewing.

Maturity is knowing you were an idiot in the past.
Wisdom is knowing that you'll be an idiot in the future.
Common sense is knowing that you should try not to be an idiot NOW.
