It sounds to me that you have, unknowingly, stepped into a political
situation.
>From what you describe, I would guess that:
1) Your supervisor did not know you were applying for this position
2) The dept. that you applied to has asked your supervisor for input
3) It is possible that they have assumed you are unhappy where you are
4) Your supervisor perceives a threat to you being hired
Questions for thought:
1) How does the new position relate to your current one (if at all)?
2) If you received the position, where in the hierarchy would
you fit in relation to your supervisor?
3) Two years a long time to be under contract. Did the department you
are
in ask to hire you, and you refused? (somewhere in the past)
4) Who benefits by you NOT being hired?
The truth is, it is very good that all this has occurred. You can
re-evaluate your options. It is highly likely, based on how you answer
the above questions (to yourself, not to us), that you may decide you
prefer not to work for them after all...
Tread carefully and don't be surprised by what happens.
