"Big name" computer companies like Dell, Gateway,
etc., often use proprietary form factor cases and
motherboards, which make it difficult or impossible
to replace a desktop's motherboard with an after-
market one. The RAM, HDs and various cards that
go into the MB slots are usually still compatible with
other manufacturers' parts even if their specs and
model numbers are customized to the brand, so
Dell-marked motherboards and RAM are no more
or less likely to be incompatible with other brands
than anyone else's.
