I agree wholeheartedly. Many writers choose this field because they
write much better than they speak. Further, you should expect that
professional writers have larger written vocabularies than spoken
vocabularies, thus exacerbating this division. It makes all the sense in
the world that some Technical Writers are 1) good writers, 2) not good
verbal communicaters, but 3) can still be employed. Just reading this
list is proof enough of that...

As someone who has been editing in the field for over
20 years, I can assure you that there are people who
are being paid as technical writers who write their
little hearts out but communicate very poorly.
