TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
At my performance review 2 years ago, my manager actually said (and I quote)
"I don't know any other technical writers, but I'm sure there are a lot out
there who are better than you". I found that comment to be very
de-motivating, but the "B" in me wanted to give her a list of names. Isn't
it funny how you always think of the best comebacks after the fact? I should
have said "I know I'm the best, but I'm the best you've ever had". Which is
the truth.
My performance review was good - quality of work - excellent, understanding
of nature of my work - excellent, ability to meet deadlines - satisfactory,
ability to perform as part of a team - above satisfactory, and so on. Yes, I
got a raise, fairly average amount. I'm not complaining about my
compensation, I'm in the mid - to hi range for techwriters in my area.
I'm not young and fresh out of school with something to prove. I've proven
myself and paid my dues. I will give that bit extra when necessary, in
special circumstances, but I will not give up having a life so that they can
avoid having to hire a second technical writer, which they need to do. I
live by the motto that lack of planning on your part does not constitute an
emergency on my part. When they know what will be in an upgrade for months,
but refuse to give me the information until a few weeks before the release,
then no, I'm not going to work around the clock. The docs will be late, and
not my fault. Someone needs to plan better next time.
That's my rant for the day!
