TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Do I remember correctly that a few folks were complaining about the
inability to see the entire conference schedule at a glance? If so,
there's a solution. First, visit the session search page: http://www.stc.org/55thConf/sessions/search01.asp
To see what is going on each day, simply select the day in question
and leave the default value beside it as "All". Don't type any keywords.
Simple interface design problem: it's not obvious this would provide
access to the whole program "at a glance" because most people will
see the keyword field and assume they need to type something; this is
labeled a "search" function, after all, and most of us (quite
logically) assume that searches find only subsets of the total
information. Few people will make the connection that you can search
for the whole day's events, even though the default choice says "All".
I've mentioned this problem to STC, so hopefully they'll fix it for
next year. Before we get started on the inevitable "shouldn't a group
of professional communicators have a superb Web site?" slagging of
STC, I'll insert a note that there's a largeish committee working to
improve the site. Yes, the site has many flaws. Yes, STC is working
on them. It'll get better.
