Hi,
The feedback is often ignored. And, when it's not ignored, I've seen
logically reasoned feedback shot down for illogical reasons or no good
reasons. And, after that behaviour is repeated, those who would offer
feedback get cheesed off. I'm not sure if the tactic is deliberate, but
it seems to work in reducing the amount of feedback received.
Voting? Voting is a different issue. I think voting will always be a
problem because most of us do not know the candidates and, so, have no
reason to choose between them. Often, the guy from the biggest chapter
wins just because he gets his chapter's vote. Moreover, now that
regional directors are gone, the candidates are going to be even further
removed from the membership, particularly the membership of smaller
chapters. I don't have a good solution for that.
Cheers,
Sean

I think, for those who are STC members, you should all give STC
feedback - the real problem (and I know because I've attended a couple
of board meetings)... Is that members do not give as much feedback as
desired in a timely manner.
STC sends out surveys and relatively few members complete them.
Voting? Relatively few members vote. This means that the STC reps don't
really represent the voice of the membership, only the voice of those
who voted....
Of course, that is the problem with our country as well <but I won't go
there, this is a technical writing list after all>
As the IPP for the Israel Chapter (recently relocated to the US since my
husband's work is here...), I have come to realize that STC is only as
effective as the volunteers involved. Most of us have no idea how many
of the board members DONATE their time and most people involved need to
have an additional income. I would love to be more involved in STC - but
I can't afford to!
All of these things impact how effective STC is... That is why it is so
very important that you become members, and that as members, you let
your voice be heard... I know, personally, that the board is quite
responsive to well posed arguments that do not attack or insult, but
just plain present facts in an orderly and logical manner. They are also
limited by their resources and what they know, and don't know...
So I hope this contributes to the furtherance of positive change!
