Manuals added to Qantas emergency: probe
Conflicting advice between two manuals contributed to the emergency
landing of a Qantas jet in Los Angeles earlier this year, the aviation
safety investigator has found.
The Sydney-bound plane, with 232 passengers and crew aboard, was moments
from lifting off in late March when the pilot noticed a warning light in
the cockpit.
The pilot aborted takeoff, the plane braked heavily and passengers were
told by Qantas crew members to "brace" as the jumbo came to an abrupt
halt.
An Australian Transport Safety Bureau report released on Monday said
conflicting advice in the Flight Crew Training Manual (FCTM) and the
Flight Crew Operations Manual (FCOM) had "created the potential for
confusion".
"The conflicting information between the FCOM and the FCTM regarding
hydraulic system pressure loss created the potential for confusion by
flight crew," the bureau said.
Qantas has asked the plane's manufacturer to clarify the FCTM.
"The operator suggested to the manufacturer that, if it was not policy to
land at the nearest suitable airport in the case of a single hydraulic
system failure, the FCTM text be either clarified or deleted," the
bureau's report said.
