embedding images in Word

I am having a strange difficulty with Word.

I am working on a Word master document that contains linked images (using
INCLUDEPICTURE). I am working with Word 2003.

I need to create a copy of my document with embedded images

I have been embedding images by selecting Edit>Links... and clicking the
[Break Link] button.

This seems to work for some images, but not all of them. Break link will
only work with images that are formatted In line with text. So, I formatted
all my images as in line with text.

 However, the odd thing is that many of the images that are formatted as in
line with text disappear when I break the link. Some images work properly
(and appear as they should) and some don't.

It seems completely random and incredibly frustrating.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this odd difficulty?
