"In an announcement, how does one refer to significant others when they are
not married? I am putting an announcement in the paper for my inlaws' 50th
wedding anniversary. In mentioning the grandchildren, I would like to also
mention their spouses and significant others."

You may think "partner" is too cold, but others don't. My wife and I
described ourselves that way prior to getting that piece of paper and it's
far better than using lover, mate, and such. You could also just describe
them as "John and Mable" and let the read try to figure out their
relationship.
