TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Let me second Leonard's recommendations. I do the same things he does
with H&M. The only snag is that it lets table cells split across pages
in printed output. I took care of that with a special text style to use
in tables.
We output to electronic book (searchable, makes developers happy) and a
few variations on PDF output. The PDFs can be made to look very fancy
if you like. There is conditional output at various levels (individual
text variables, conditions within a topic, and build tags for topics),
and you can even do all your output in a batch file that lets you
substitute different sets of text variables on the fly.
The support is excellent, with the developers and the main technical
writer/support guy monitoring the forums constantly.
Yesterday afternoon we needed to output a special version for a
potential customer that removed DRAFT markings on some topics, changed
the order of other topics, and hid a few topics. I was able to create
that version in about 12 minutes flat, including time for H&M to build
the three output formats.
There is a brand new update to H&M that offers a few real advantages.
It no longer uses a potentially corruptible internal database, and there
is some new flexibility. Material is stored in XML format now, which
may be useful to some.
