TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I've been tasked with creating a knowledge base, and I'd be grateful for
any recommendations or advice anyone might have. I searched the Techwr-l
archives and found only one useful lead.
Following are the requirements. I've broken them into two categories:
"Necessary" and "Nice to have".
Necessary
1. Runs on Bluehost (a web hosting service that supports Apache,
JavaScript, DHTML, PHP 5, Perl, Ruby, MySQL, PostgreSQL)
2. Has an internet based editing interface that enables users to
open a browser, navigate to the URL, and create or edit a section
3. Supports multiple authors (though not necessarily
simultaneously)
4. Supports editorial review prior to public release (unlike, say,
Wikipedia, in which any changes you make to a page are published as soon
as you save the page)
5. Supports printing of individual sections
6. Search
7. Full control over who is authorized to edit (unlike, say,
Wikipedia, which anyone can edit)
8. Topic creation and sorting by software version
Nice to have
1. Free
2. Cascading style sheets so that I can customize the look
3. Easy to implement and maintain
Create HTML or Microsoft Word content and convert to Help file formats or
printed documentation. Features include support for Windows Vista & 2007
Microsoft Office, team authoring, plus more. http://www.DocToHelp.com/TechwrlList
