Umm, open source and free are not synonymous. For example,
someone recommended CoffeeCup, who do offer a free version of
their HTML editor as well as a commercial version, but neither one
is open source. If you're really looking for open source, the list of
choices will be a lot shorter than if you only require something free.
Also, are you looking for a code editor (e.g. a text editor with
syntax highlighting) or something more WYSIWIG, like CoffeeCup?
If you're looking for a code editor, one high quality free and
open-source option is Crimson Editor, which has syntax highlighting
for C/C++, Perl, Java, Matlab, and LaTeX as well as HTML. I've used
it mostly for XML and XSL.
