TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Once you define what you need, as Suzette wisely points out, there are
pre-packaged invoice templates that can give you a running start,
including those that ship with Word and Excel, and those available for
download from the Microsoft web site.
For a lean and simple time tracker, I've been happily using the free
Personal Task Manager since February, http://ptm.sourceforge.net/. I
copy data from it into our weekly time spreadsheet here at the office.
Very simple. If I needed to get really fancy, an Access database houses
the time records. They can be extracted or manipulated from Access, if
you wish, but it is not necessary.

Wouldn't that depend on what information they require from you on your
invoice?
