Yes, I've been through several of those "touchy-feely" workshops, and
"inflict" is definitely the right word. I particularly hate having to
take time out for these things when I have some type of pressing
deadline looming over me.

"If you are the sort of keep-to-yourself person who brushes off
greetings
and attempts at conversation with a one-word grunt, you run the risk of
being labeled anti-social and un-promotable."

I actually think that my being introverted by mature was a factor in my
getting canned from a library job (which resulted in my making the
career change to technical writing). I admit that most of the problem
was poor job performance because I was in the wrong line of work, but my
boss had told me that "You need to establish more of a rapport with your
coworkers," and that the library director felt the same way. When said
library director delivered the bad news, he actually said, "You don't
fit into the system here."
