It was a slow news week up here in Vermont and while I live on the other
side of the Green Mountains, I have noticed an excess of "Ss" laying around.
Vermonters are known for practicality and ingenuity, and we are very civic
minded. Instead of leaving all those excess letters laying around for
someone to trip over, it was placed on the layout for the masthead. The next
person in line figured it must be there for a reason, so instead of tossing
the extra letter away, he/she straightened it out and sent everything off to
the printer.
It wasn't put there to make the paper a collector's item. It was a safety
issue.
