There are, and have been quite a few of these multi-workspace/big
desktop/multiple virtual desktop apps for Windows; others have had the same
irritation that you have experienced. Googling for relevant phrases returns
quite a few hits.
I use VirtuaWin (http://virtuawin.sourceforge.net/ )... I can't quite say
I'm ecstatic with it, because it seems to have a few bugs (annoying
behavior, rather), but otherwise it does what I want (though the version I
use still doesn't have KDE/GNOME's right-click-and-send-to-another-workspace
functionality).
If MSVDM is a problem, and you have the time and inclination to experiment,
you could try out third-party alternatives and see if they cause problems
with other software as well, or coexist peacefully. I don't use Flare of
FullShot, but the stuff I do use works quite well with VirtuaWin.

Ed.
