The USB thumb drive is good, the USB hard drive is better. (more room!)
I have desktop and laptop, and use MS's SyncToy to keep stuff current
between the two.
You could do the same thing with the USB hard drive- sync the important
parts of your directory structure to the external drive from whatever
you used last.
If you're going to use the 'other' laptop, sync it to the USB drive then
go play- you'll have what you need.
No connectivity required.
(pardon my paranoia, but I'm not trusting my data to any part of the
'cloud' except while in transit.)
