It's going to depend on the state you live in. In Massachusetts,
coverage for pre-existing conditions starts immediately. However, you
have to be a member of a "group" (like Mass Businessman's
Association)...insurance companies in the state aren't allowed to sell
directly to consultants any more. In Connecticut, pre-existing
conditions are covered as long as there's no lapse in coverage...that
is, you can go directly from one insurance company to another without
a waiting period. But if the first policy lapses, you have to start
over with the second company (whatever their requirements are).
