There is a difference between "certification" and having a "certificate." A
certificate shows that you have received technical writing education and
that can be good if your education or experience is limited. A certificate
can bolster your education a little bit. "Certification" means that a
person has proven themselves to a professional organization, so the person
gets a sort of seal of approval as being able to do the job.

I had a technical writing class 15 years ago and other business
communication classes that were later used in a technical writing
certificate program at the college that I attended. I think that education
is valuable.
