TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I wasn't talking about continuing education. Nevertheless, you make a
good point. I would add that some people go to law school because they
love the law and/or justice and many people go to medical school because
the love medicine and/or want to help people. Likewise, many people get
advanced degrees in English and/or technical writing because they feel
post-graduate education will help them to achieve mastery. My statement
was just the thin edge of a reductio ad absurdum I was hoping to
develop. Personally, I wouldn't deny or disparage the economic
motivations (that some think inane), and I think it's sad to see someone
universally denigrate post-graduate education.

"Only to improve their job prospects"? Lawyers and doctors continue
their
education to keep their licenses. PMP and other certificate holders
continue their education to keep their certificates. Continuing
education
in these cases isn't about keeping the job; it's about keeping the
credentials.
