TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I had a different (but similar issue)... they didn't want me working at
home on proprietary knowledge.
I asked them what was the difference between me taking a computer home
and stealing all their info (if I was going to do it), and coming into
work and deleting all of their customer contracts (which I could do if I
was truly evil), or bringing in a minidisk and downloading everything
from the server and selling it to their competitor? I told them
"Proprietary knowledge is just that - it doesn't matter WHERE I access
it, and if I really wanted to, I could mess things up - you need to fix
your security so that even if I wanted to, I could NOT mess up - in
office or out."
I am now working at home with no problems, when I am able (sometimes I
NEED to be here).... oh, and I have increased permissions too for some
other jobs I need to work on <grin>
